BIG ORCHESTRA

Contemporary art has its own sound: Musical instruments that are at the same time sculptures represent a still young and relatively unknown development in contemporary art. All the artistic works presented in this publication accompanying the international group exhibition also possess every property of a musical instrument. Playing these sculptural instruments forms the centre of an exhibition caught up in constant change. For the duration of its run the Schirn becomes a temporary concert hall in which the works are activated and made to sound. Visitors can experience the sound of the artworks live; the sound of the instruments is explored by ever newly assembled ensembles and subsequently presented in concerts, and at times the artists let their own works resound in performances. The point of departure for the concept is an expanded notion of art and music of the kind familiar from the Fluxus movement of the 1960s: happenings or actions were understood as „concerts“, since they were structured much like compositions and different media and materials with one another
