Diccionario & ficción = Ficcionario – With his book “Ficcionario” – the title fuses the two words diccionario and ficción – Sebastián Díaz Morales, born in 1975 in the Patagonian oil town of Comodoro Rivadavia, presents a kind of autopoietic summation of his work in images, texts and accounts by those involved. Since completing his studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 2001, the Argentinian film artist has been invited to exhibit by many major European and US institutions and has taken part in many important film and video festivals and numerous biennials worldwide. Advisedly, he invokes as the motto for one of the chapters of his book a saying by the great Argentinian national poet Jorge Luis Borges: “The spirit dreamed. The world was its dream.” This particular view of reality, a fusion of poetic and realist modes of narration, is characteristic of the Latin American literature of fantastic realism as well as of the docu-fictional style of South American cinema. In the work of Sebastián Díaz Morales these influences come to bear when, for example, in his film “Pasajes” he has a man hurry from room to room, joining together the most disparate worlds. His installation “Insight” goes one decisive step further and raises the question: in front of or behind the camera – is all this really only an illusion? The same is true of this book, which anyone who picks it up may understand as an intelligent and entertaining journey!
