Über dieses Buch

The heartbreaking pattern of the present or "A kind of post-corona impressionism"

Absence is a recurring theme in Sophie Reinhold's work: the omitted, the unsaid, the uninvited. Basic rules of abstraction. That not everything has to be said. That creates something like a basic mood. A pattern, perhaps. It creates a space away from language. A very clear silence. With a large number of motifs, the overview of a pattern is easily lost. Disorder spreads. Distance helps to regain an overview. As soon as the repetition of the motif is confirmed, the pattern has successfully asserted itself, which triggers both the obsessive and the spirit of serenity ... The really clever thing about Sophie Reinhold's painting is that the artist assumes, and proves again and again in her art, that her reality cannot be smoothed over, that the event has long since taken place before it can be forced into a form. Her art practises a kaleidoscopic multiplicity and does not follow a one-sided formula, which makes this work versatile and multi-layered. One method becomes clear: the decision to grind her painting, the stripping and applying of her images, reflects the idea that our experience of reality is tantamount to the wear and tear of everyday life ... As far as I know, "Das kann das Leben kosten" was the first Berlinger exhibition to open after the easing of restrictions due to the Covid19 pandemic. The paintings, which were created before the global crisis, prove that Sophie Reinhold is looking at our lumpy present with appropriate urgency. Tenzing Barshee
