Stephan Balkenhol in Sankt Elisabeth

Alongside existing works such as “Sempre Più” and the “Großer Kopf,” Stephan Balkenhol is showing, at the invitation of the Diocese of Fulda and the Catholic Church in Kassel, seven new large-format wooden reliefs for the nave of the Sankt Elisabeth parish church on Friedrichsplatz in Kassel, a female figure for the tower chapel and a male figure on a golden sphere for the open space high up in the bell tower. The great summer event in Kassel, which every five years turns the city into a mecca of the art world, is enriched by this exhibition with an additional attraction of wide public appeal. At the same time the artist is concerned with such tangible themes as pain, death and love, which combine with deeper meaning and perception and are thus intended to re-establish art’s ancient connection with the Christian attributes of cross and blessing.
