“As a sculptor he works fast, accurate to the millimetre, methodically and with intense concentration. As a photographer, Kanclerski becomes a drifter,” Felix Koberstein writes in his text. With the journeys and research stays that form part of the SPRENGEL PREIS, a new artistic perspective on the various regions of Europe opens up time and again. Since the realignment of the SPRENGEL PREIS, Sven-Julien Kanclerski is now the first to turn his gaze to Eastern Europe and to explore Romania from his artistic point of view. Far removed from any touristic interest, he develops a view entirely his own which, interestingly, reveals just as clear an artistic profile as it creates a dense atmospheric picture. These are sideshows, peculiarities at the margins that in fact nobody sees and nobody wants to see, yet all of them reveal the eye of the sculptor, who recognises forms and correspondences of form everywhere, who identifies bizarre affinities of form in wholly disparate objects and who, in doing so, again and again uncovers in a touching way the traces of human action in the seemingly accidental.
