Thomas Feuerstein has transformed the rooms of the Galerie im Taxispalais Innsbruck into a coherent ensemble of greenhouse, laboratory kitchen, cold store and factory. Tubes meander through the exhibition, connecting apparatus and objects; in a chemical process a synthetic hallucinogen is obtained from algae and fungi and at the same time a viscous slime is produced, thick threads and streaks forming themselves into a sculpture at once transparent and liquid. The psychotropic effect of the hallucinogenic substance, which causes solid objects to dissolve in perception, is mirrored as a real process; the interior of the psyche and the exterior of the polymer slime begin to overlap. Thomas Feuerstein (b. 1968 in Innsbruck, lives in Vienna) employs biochemical processes as an artistic means of expression for spectacular installations on the borderline between art and the scientific experimental set-up, fragmenting scientific models of explanation and questioning their claim to truth. Through the manifold use of media customary in art, new contexts of meaning arise, the factual is interlocked with the fictitious, meanings shift. Where could this be better read than in a book concisely compiled by the artist himself!
