The LA colours in the viewfinder
The size and vastness of a city like Los Angeles is almost impossible to grasp. Nevertheless, people have often tried to capture LA in photographs. The freeways, the superficial glamour and the dream factory created iconic images. But when you explore this city on foot, as Freddy Perez did for two years, a completely different picture emerges. Under the blue sky and the glistening sun, the city of longing and dreams becomes an abstract image. Without pursuing typologies or specific motifs, without capturing social aspects or spontaneous situations on the street, LA is shown soberly and crystal clear in the harsh light. Only the sun, shadows, light and colours determine the composition. The various elements in the rectangle of the viewfinder - sky, architecture, cars, lettering, plants - intertwine to form a two-dimensional whole in which foreground and background merge without hierarchy. Freddy Perez moves through the city and finds pictorial compositions through the camera's viewfinder that are characterised by their clarity and abstractness.
