Day and night, reality and fiction, nature and culture – Ugo Rondinone (*1964) lends everyday things and phenomena a poetic dimension. A tree, a clock, the sun or a rainbow – by means of repetition, isolation or reduction he places them in a new context in the minimalist manner typical of him and creates atmospheric mood pictures. The Schirn is devoting a large survey exhibition to Rondinone in which central paintings, sculptures and video works by the renowned Swiss artist are presented. He is also conceiving a new installation especially for the Schirn, extending across the entire length of the gallery and into the Rotunda. The exhibition and the book “Life Time” bring together essential themes that have shaped the work of this conceptual and installation artist for 30 years: time and transience, day and night, reality and fiction, nature and culture. Again and again Rondinone draws in his works on the iconography of Romanticism, quoting literature and pop culture. The starting point of his multimedia oeuvre is the turning inside out of the external world into a subjective, emotional inner world. He devises spaces of experience in which the public becomes part of the installations and their immersive arrangement.
