A school of seeing for children. For the first time, the Museum für Fotografie is opening its doors explicitly to children: some 160 works illustrate the uses, the forms of design and the modes of expression of photography from its beginnings to the present. Artists such as Lyonel Feininger and Hannah Höch already built a bridge in some of their works between childhood and imaginative perception. Accordingly, ten associative chapters in this book, which addresses children and young people (as well as their parents), offer a colourful abundance of pictures and stories. They touch on themes such as finding, collecting and narrating pictures; reading numbers, letters or clouds; discoveries in everyday life, at school and while travelling; natural events in town and country; family ties and/or photo-booth portraits. Games with colour, light, mirrors and materials come into play just as much as the enigmatic, and fun alternates with seriousness. A selection of printed, drawn and sculptural depictions of objects complements the publication, which sets its store by the concrete and sensuous materiality of original photographs and seeks to offer a school of seeing.
