Welt aus den Fugen

On installation, once again – Since the 1960s, installation has developed into an essential genre of art. It confronts the public with a wealth of information and a multitude of simultaneous events that constantly challenge the capacity to take them in – a condition that is ubiquitous in today’s knowledge society. In spatial installations the classical artistic genres are hardly used any more; installations are staged mainly with everyday objects, ready-mades and new media. In viewing them, the public finds itself in the midst of the work, all the senses are addressed, and film, video, light, sound and smells in particular expand the usual aesthetic event into a holistic experience. The inner density is continuously co-produced as the numerous impressions are ordered subjectively and assembled according to the situation. Through the use of new digital media, installations have gained additional complexity. The clear separation between work of art and public dissolves in favour of multimedia spaces in which the world literally seems to be out of joint. Taking nine expansive installations by international contemporary artists of the younger generation, the publication Welt aus den Fugen shows how artists today respond to the pressing themes of climate change, artificial intelligence, crypto-evolution, ecology, identity politics and migration. With a glossary, the volume also offers a multi-faceted overview of the key concepts.
