ZEIT – Von Dürer bis Bonvicini

Time is one of the great riddles of the history of civilisation; its definitions are numerous and are to be found in the most varied disciplines, from religion through biology to economics, first and foremost of course in physics and, as a subject rich in tradition, in art. It is surprising that in Switzerland, the nation of clocks and watches, time has so far been made the subject of an epoch-spanning and transdisciplinary exhibition by only a few art museums. The sensuous approach taken by the Kunsthaus Zürich, curated by Cathérine Hug, traverses the history of time, presenting paintings, films, installations, performances and artefacts (clocks and watches in particular) from the last 600 years. And even if the clock as a measurer of time stands at the starting point, temporal perspectives besides the physical one – the biological, the palaeontological or that of personal sensation – are also subjected to close examination. With works by, among others, Sinzo Aanza, Giacomo Balla, Black Quantum Futurism, Manon de Boer & George van Dam, Abraham-Louis Breguet, Pieter Claesz, Honoré Daumier, Jean Dubuffet, William Hogarth, Roni Horn, Monica Ursina Jäger, On Kawara, Herlinde Koelbl, Alicja Kwade, MANON, Jonathan Monk, Sophie Nys, Dieter Roth, Cyril Schäublin, Una Szeemann.
