Snoeck Verlagsgesellschaft Cologne has now published the comprehensive volume of photographic works by Alex Hanimann. It presents a selection from two ongoing series of images created over the past ten years. They differ fundamentally from one another, both in the way they were made and in their appearance and materialisation. While one half of the book shows statically staged photographs taken in the studio and focused on the human figure, the other consists of images of landscapes photographed in and out of motion. Where the former are in colour, calculated and rigorously composed, the latter are dynamic, at times hastily blurred, taken from unusual vantage points and generally in black and white. Calculation and chance, or order and chaos, would be fitting pairs of terms for a possible subtitle. On the one hand, rules – and the experiences and insights derived from them – form the governing guidelines and framework; on the other, moments, glances and events become images without any particular intention or causal connection. Both approaches are anchored in the history of art as fundamental artistic techniques. The publication thus makes it possible to render visible, in a calculated sequence, Alex Hanimann’s engagement with the techniques and principles of image production – an engagement spanning many years.
