Arno FischerEine Reise

In the streets of Berlin/East! Arno Fischer (1927–2011) occupies an important place in twentieth-century German photography. Throughout his career he worked in the most varied photographic genres: he showed fashion in the streets of eastern European cities, but also portrayed ordinary citizens of the Eastern bloc and their everyday lives. His travels took him to Equatorial Guinea, India, the Soviet Union and the United States, among other places, where of course he always had his camera with him. When he was not roaming the streets with it, he was an active member of DIREKT, a group of photographers founded in East Berlin in 1965 who in the 1970s and 1980s contributed substantially to the differentiation of East German visual culture. Together with his wife, the photographer Sibylle Bergemann, Arno Fischer also maintained contacts with the international photography scene. Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson and René Burri were always glad to drop in at their flat on the Schiffbauerdamm. Arno Fischer was also a passionate teacher, who cultivated an intensive exchange with students first at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig and, after the fall of the Wall, at the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie und Gestaltung in Berlin.
