Über dieses Buch

Of course you come across bizarre stuff!

Borden Capalino's works, which could also be described as a kind of forensic surrealism, begin with a collection process: he collates, sorts and archives images from the craigslist.com website. He then selects images according to formal criteria, which he alters, cuts up and reassembles by ironing them onto the canvas. Capalino also applies a wide variety of materials, deliberately avoiding art supply shops, as he finds his materials in supermarkets, household goods shops, pharmacies and pet shops. The result is an irritating combination of photography and sculpture: the artist removes parts of the photos and adds materials such as tar, coffee, iodine, dried food or worms, which he arranges symmetrically and clearly. Ultimately, he creates a kind of decorative archaeology, as if he wanted to make dead surfaces dance.
