Fuzzy Dark Spot

The book FUZZY DARK SPOT, published to accompany the exhibition at the Sammlung Falckenberg / Deichtorhallen Hamburg, examines in 56 positions how social and media-related irritations and manipulations are interpreted using video as an artistic medium. This relates to television, to the enlightening counter-public movements of the 1970s, to the use of video as a medium of surveillance as well as a means of artistic narration serving as a psychosocial mirror or as an instrument of self-optimisation in the digital present. The great influence of video images on collective memory and consciousness in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has made doubt about the image, unease with the familiar and mistrust of claims to truth into important motifs of artistic reflection. The title of the exhibition brings these strands together and describes a nebulous, blurred point, place or condition lying in the dark. The term fuzzy dark spot comes from an internet forum in which mould contaminating camera lenses is discussed. Curated by the Hamburg video artist Wolfgang Oelze, the exhibition takes a comprehensive look at the works of Hamburg artists in the context of the Sammlung Falckenberg.
