Gregor Schneider, winner of the Ernst Franz Vogelmann Prize for Sculpture 2023! Never being able to escape spaces, because they are charged socially and by taboos, because in addition to their physical effect they also unfold a psychological one, characterises Gregor Schneider’s artistic stance. Gregor Schneider, born in Rheydt in 1969, became known to a broad public overnight in 2001 with “Totes Haus u r,” after the work had been awarded the Golden Lion at the Biennale in Venice. Now, following Roman Signer, Franz Erhard Walther, Thomas Schütte, Richard Deacon and Ayşe Erkmen, he receives the Ernst Franz Vogelmann Prize for Sculpture 2023. The artist, who has taught at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf since 2016, “looks behind the façade of things and, in passing, redefines the terms sculpture and installation,” the jury said in explaining its choice. And indeed, his biographically grounded agenda forms the disconcerting point of departure for his works, which turn visitors into acting protagonists.
