Günther Förg began painting coloured murals in 1978, when he was still a student at the academy. As he likes to say with a laugh, it was the obvious thing for him to do - after all, he had always earned extra money as a painter during his studies. In total, he created over 140 murals, a selection of which can now be seen in the Deichtorhallen. Günther Förg had been looking forward to the exhibition of the murals in the Deichtorhallen; in an interview years ago, he had already clearly divided this important body of work into different types: "... the first were vertical, later horizontal wall bisections. Then there are colour sequences in which different areas of colour stand next to each other. There were rooms in which all four walls were painted in different colours. Various paintings were created in public or semi-public spaces. In these works, the focus is on the architecture, which is made visible and/or emphasised by the painting. The colour refers to the location ... He also created wall paintings with surfaces and stripes as well as murals that are close to panel paintings." The critic Hans-Joachim Müller put it this way: "Günther Förg was a genuine spatial artist!"
