“The art collector we deserve?,” that is the question posed by the New York artist, critic and exhibition-maker Kenny Schachter in his very personal text on his friendship with Harald Falckenberg. After the anniversary exhibition “25 Years Sammlung Falckenberg” in 2019, which was devoted to installation as the core medium of the Sammlung Falckenberg, 2025 brings painting into focus. In the book “How’s My Painting?” the medium is presented comprehensively for the first time, with more than 100 works from the Sammlung Falckenberg. Setting out from Werner Büttner, Albert Oehlen and Martin Kippenberger – who with their punk-derived attitude shook up the established art scene of the 1980s and who, with their American contemporaries Raymond Pettibon and Mike Kelley, represent the notion of counter culture so formative for the Sammlung Falckenberg – the exhibition traces a wide arc across every variant of the medium, from the panel painting to its installational, deconstructive and conceptual manifestations. A large proportion of the works has not been shown in the collection for many years. Alongside the artists named above, those represented include Vito Acconci, Donald Baechler, John Baldessari, Heike Kati Barath, Robert Barry, Monica Bonvicini, Nicole Eisenman, Urs Fischer, Günter Förg, Anna Gudjonsdottir, Philip Guston, Hans Haacke, Georg Herold, Michel Majerus, Jonathan Meese, Manuel Ocampo, Joyce Pensato, Charlotte Posenenske, Daniel Richter, Kay Rosen, Peter Saul, Andreas Schulze, Ena Swansea, Norbert Schwontkowski, Franz West, Johannes Wohnseifer, Thomas Zipp and many others.
