Visual spaces of the cosmos, ritual and speculation

Isabel Nuño de Buen (born 1985 in Mexico City) has been honoured with the SPRENGEL PRIZE 2021. The prize is awarded by the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung and the state of Lower Saxony to visual artists from Lower Saxony and is intended to provide impetus for cultural exchange in Europe. It is accompanied by a catalogue and an exhibition at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover, and the prize also includes a six-month travel grant to another European country. Isabel Nuño de Buen's unconventional position as a sculptor, who combines different cultures, media and techniques in subtle, symbolic and sculptural interventions, impressed the prize jury just as much as her most recent presentation in the large hall of the Kunstverein Hannover. Her journey took her through Spain and France to view historical tapestries and to place her work in direct dialogue with these impressive works. Isabel Nuño de Buen completed her studies at the HBK Braunschweig in 2014 under Bogomir Ecker, in 2015 she received the annual scholarship of the state of Lower Saxony and in 2016 the prize of the Kunstverein Hannover. She recently had solo exhibitions at the Kunstverein Hannover and at The 500 Capp Street Foundation in San Francisco.
