Maria Lassnig is one of the most influential Austrian artists after 1945, whose painterly work has attracted enormous interest beyond her home country in recent years with retrospective exhibitions in Munich, Cologne, London and Cincinatti. Her work is characterised by a muted colour palette, fragmented and even sculptural depictions of figures and bodies, whimsical themes and unconventional pictorial perspectives, which were initially reintroduced into the discussion by a primarily feminist-inspired art historiography. Now, however, the tide has turned for the Carinthian artist and there is finally movement in her status as an artist-artist, as evidenced not least by the upcoming retrospective at the Deichtorhallen, 21 June - 21 September 2013, which was previously on show at the Neue Galerie Graz.
This book, edited by Andrea Madesta, was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Körperbilder" (body awarness painting) in Klagenfurt in spring 2006 and was immediately sold out. On the occasion of the exhibition in Hamburg, we have now succeeded in making the remainder of the edition in Carinthia available to the trade again, so that we can now offer it. This extremely attractive volume with a comprehensive overview of the artist's entire oeuvre is an excellent introduction.
