For ten years, Mille Kalsmose’s »Collected Memory« has quietly gathered the personal reflections of participants across the world, transforming individual gestures into an evolving archive of shared human experience, for which the book »Collected Momory« is now being released. With the installation, »feeling arrives first, thought only afterwards. The brass structure, gently arched and monumental in scale, reads as something between architecture and embrace: warm in its material presence, open in its gesture, quietly insistent in its invitation to come closer. And one does come closer. The eye moves towards the densely shelved sheets of coloured paper, but it is the hands that want to complete the act of perception: to draw out a single sheet, to hear the soft rustle of its unfolding, to feel the delicate grain of the paper as the fingers smooth it flat. Vision, touch, and movement converge in a single, unhurried gesture. For all its monumental dimensions, with over four thousand sheets held within the segmental arch of the shelving, the experience of engaging with this work is irreducibly human in scale«, Alexander Gottlob Linke writes. The work consists of hand-dyed, folded papers that become an ever-growing archive of shared human experiences and visitors of the exhibitions are invited to write a personal reflection, fold the paper, and place it into a sculptural structure. Over time, these individual contributions accumulate into a collective whole. Formally, the installations draw on traditions of archives, libraries, and cabinets of curiosities – carefully preserving what is fragile. Taken together, these perspectives explain why »Collected Memory« has held up over ten years: not through spectacle, but through the slow accumulation of individual acts of trust. What connects them is simple – the wish to be witnessed, to belong, and to leave something of oneself in others’ keeping. That this need finds form in so simple a gesture – a sheet of paper, a fold, a word written and entrusted to others – is perhaps the most telling thing about the work. The publcation accompanies the exhibition »Mille Kalsmose: A Life Building Survival Kits« – Mille Kalsmose’s first solo exhibition in Germany at the Kunsthalle Cloppenburg.
