Nicole Eisenman und die ModernenKöpfe, Küsse, Kämpfe

“At the well of history,” that is where Georg Imdahl, in his extensive review in the FAZ – Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (22 November 2021), sees the work of the New York-based Nicole Eisenman (b. 1965) as standing. It is compelling in its committed contemplation of the conditio humana, its interest in socially relevant interactions and its precise observation of the alienating processes of civilisation. In her drawings, paintings and sculptures the artist combines elements of popular visual media (political satire, comics) with traditional art-historical references to form a new unity. “Köpfe, Küsse, Kämpfe” brings together works from all periods of Eisenman’s career. Against the background of an artistic practice that draws on set pieces of popular culture as well as on various stylistic and compositional elements of historical painting, exhibition and book combine Eisenman’s art with works of classical modernism from the collections of the partner museums, thus creating a visual resonance chamber in which past and impending social upheavals take on contour in their urgency, but also in their capacity to awaken hope.
