Since the late 1970s, Silvia Bächli (*1956) has developed her graphic work both carefully and consistently. The expressive approach to physicality has given way to an almost introspective view of reality. Everyday perception forms the starting point for Silvia Bächli's artistic process, in the course of which she appropriates things in order to give them autonomous graphic form. And since 1984, she has been combining her small-format drawings into multi-part compositions on the wall. From 2001 onwards, she then worked on large-format works on paper with overlapping, delicate lineaments; in recent years, the colour surface has also become related to the picture ground. Silvia Bächli's silent work is now recognised worldwide, as evidenced by exhibitions in 2007 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, 2014 at the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich, 2022 at the Museum Weserburg in Bremen and 2024 at the Centro Botin in Santander. In 2009, she represented Switzerland at the 53rd Venice Biennale. The exhibition at the Kunst Museum Winterthur entitled "dass eins zum andern wurde. Which is which?" is based on a quote by the American poet Elizabeth Bishop, and the picture book designed by Silvia Bächli provides an overview of this multifaceted artistic oeuvre - the first time a series of small-scale sculptures has been presented in Switzerland. "My work is an approach to something that I don't know exactly and that I only find out by doing," she says.
