Light, Space, Time – that would name everything Susa Templin needs for her work, besides camera, darkroom and studio, and everything that distinguishes it. She does not see herself as a photographer, but locates her work rather between painting and sculpture. Her medium of choice is accordingly analogue photography. Susa Templin creates her colours in the darkroom and, with her works, leaves the flat plane behind: out of superimposed photography she creates walk-in pictorial installations and carries them over into three dimensions. Light, space and time – these, according to her, are the conditions of photographic work. Each of her works reflects the art of the photographic image that it itself is. The catalogue goes beyond a mere documentation of the installations and presents works, exhibitions and architecture-related art projects of the past ten years. In her text, Theres Rhode, curator at the MKK and a specialist in Concrete Art and photography, addresses the field of tension between abstraction and concretion. Christina Leber, director of the DZ Bank art collection, which focuses on photographic forms of expression in contemporary art, maps out in her essay the photographic philosophy of space. The two authors direct our attention to a contemporary photographic position that goes far beyond the conventional notion of photography.
