Christian Skrein (born in Vienna in 1945) now lives in the Salzkammergut. He began his career as a photographer in 1963 and started his collection in 1968, which is now recognised worldwide for its pioneering role in the reception of amateur photography. Over the years, Christian Skrein has developed a collecting activity that also draws on high-calibre artistic and documentary works for themes such as compositional formation, shadow play, forensics and portraiture. His view extends back to the 1920s and 1930s and also includes contemporary reportage photography, no doubt due to his own professional photographic practice. In the 1960s, he was the youngest photographer to work for Vogue and became known for his portraits of the Viennese bohemians of the time, which were the result of direct personal contact and which are epitomised by names such as Christian Ludwig Attersee, André Heller, Hermann Nitsch, Walter Pichler, Arnulf Rainer and Oswald Wiener. The exhibition and publication, however, focus chronologically on the historical and formal criteria of photography, resulting in a brief history of photography in iconic images and anonymous snapshots.
