Takako Saito (born 1929 in Sabae-Shi, Fukui Prefecture, Japan, has lived and worked mainly in Düsseldorf since 1978) has become internationally recognised for her objects, artist's books, performances and actions in the Fluxus context. She has always been interested in the world of things and everyday life, to which she adds her own artistic gesture through interventions or small actions. Natural materials such as stones, shells, onion skins or chestnuts are her favourite materials alongside paper, plastic, foam or pieces of wood. The carefully crafted object boxes created since the 1960s and the numerous "free" chess games, which were initially sold in George Maciunas' Fluxshop, are unmistakable. The playful approach characterises many of Takako Saito's works; the artist is always on the lookout for new game variations that go beyond fixed rules. Viewers are involved as players and co-creators, as the artist favours a participatory strategy, especially in her "Me and You-Shops" - market stall-style shops where the artist interacts with the public as a salesperson. The exhibition and book "Takako Saito: DREAMS TO DO" are retrospective in nature and present works from all important phases of her oeuvre.
