Musical instruments, which are sculptures as it were, represent a still young and relatively unknown development in contemporary art. All the artistic works presented in this publication accompanying the international group exhibition also possess all the characteristics of a musical instrument. Playing the sculptural instruments forms the centrepiece of the exhibition, which is constantly changing. For the duration of the exhibition, the Schirn will be temporarily transformed into a concert hall in which the works will be activated and made to resound. Visitors will be able to experience the sound of the artworks live, the sound of the instruments will be explored by ever-changing ensembles and then presented in concerts, and sometimes the artists will perform their own works. The starting point of the concept is an expanded concept of art and music, as known from the Fluxus movement of the 1960s: happenings or actions were understood as "concerts", as they were structured similarly to compositions and combined different media and materials.
