At the beginning of the 1990s, photography tentatively began to establish itself as a material in art and on the art market, but was still a long way from becoming an artistic genre in its own right. At present, it is one of the most diverse starting forms in artistic dialogue. At the same time, at the zenith of its rise, the question arises as to how long photography will continue to be used as an (independent) process in art. Digitalisation has almost completely replaced analogue techniques. And with the fundamental changes in technical approaches, the way photography is handled is also changing. In addition to Christina Leber's text on the history of the DZ BANK Art Collection on the occasion of its 25th anniversary, this richly illustrated volume contains five essays that examine and reclassify the relationship between photography and other artistic genres: painting, drawing and sculpture, the moving image and conceptual art. For it is time to go beyond the purely documentary function of photography in art, which has been pushed in recent years, to open the window and take a concentrated look at the possibilities of this medium as art once again.
