Hamish Fulton, born in London in 1946, is working on a wholly independent oeuvre, full of poetry and borne by a distinctive, authentic and cosmopolitan attitude. For more than 40 years he has been transposing „walking“ into an art form and naming it as such: Walks. Fulton undertakes walks on every continent, which he titles, for instance, „From Coast to Coast“ in Great Britain. The results are wall drawings and wall pictures, photographs and objects in which the formative phenomena of the walks are recorded in a variety of ways. At the same time, following the motto „No Walk, no Art“, they can also be read as a passive protest against the excesses of urbanisation, which Fulton formulates in an engaging but uncompromising manner. In 1994 Hamish Fulton for the first time also involved other people directly in his work with a Group Walk. The present volume documents the nucleus of the exhibition at the Villa Merkel in Esslingen: the artist’s walks recorded in India and Tibet in recent years.
