Having become famous as the "painter of the flesh" with his nudes and portraits, interest in Lucian Freud has increased immensely in recent years. Freud, who spoke of his human models as "dressed animals", also explored non-human animals in more detail in his work. He made no distinction between his models, as he was searching for the true nature of both animals and humans. The book uses selected works to illuminate three phases in Freud's oeuvre: initially, the moulding of dead bodies; then the animal as a companion, with the associated turn to portraiture; and finally the English subjects with depictions of dogs and horses. The exhibition's focus on the depictions of animals is intended to initiate a new look at the artistic development and work of Lucian Freud. The exhibition and book encourage a new look at the works of the 9th Rubens Prize winner of the city of Siegen in 1997, whose work is always present in the Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen thanks to the permanent loans from the Lambrecht-Schadeberg private collection.
